In another life, Kakita Chikuma would have lived her life in obscurity, a simple courtier to the Crane Clan Champion.  She would have written stories of love and passion and honor, and been happy, despite the adventures and challenges she would never see.  Indeed, were it not for the impression that the woman left on Doji Raigu during their first conversations, that life could have been true.  But now Chikuma is Gozoku, dedicated to the Empire and her beloved Champion, and happiness is but a dream.

Unlike a majority of the Empire, the Gozoku has caused Chikuma nothing but suffering, and her heart grows painful with each life that she has destroyed.  Nicknamed "The Black Fan" for the simple paper fan that she carries, the Crane is both feared and respected as the most artful courtier of her age.  Among the members of the Gozoku, only the three Champions are considered more powerful than the Imperial Advisor, and save for Bayushi Atsuki no one is more feared.

Despite her fearsome reputation Chikuma has no shortage of admirers, with her every move accented by the latest fashion as well as the sad, quiet beauty that seems to beg for a savior to arise.  In private, Chikuma is quiet and solitary, suffering regularly from nightmares and spending long nights alone.  The only time that she approaches joy is in the presence of Doji Raigu, though most believe that the two will never share more than words.
