From his first days Doji Raigu would follow in his father's path, bearing the burden of the Champion of the Crane Clan.  Unlike many bushi, however, Raigu did not feel that he was worthy of this honor, and strove daily to improve on not only his personal standards, but also in his understanding on how his own ideals would apply to the clan.  "A daimyo's honor is the honor of his servants," he proclaimed upon the death of his father, promising not only to not dishonor himself, but also to uphold the honor and dignity of the Crane.

It would not be easy.  After the Yasuki War (which Raigu blames on the Yasuki's complete lack of duty and loyalty) the Crane were attacked by the orders of Hantei Fuwija, and oftentimes suffered for no reason other than his personal disdain.  Though Raigu bore all "failures" personally, he silently wondered if such a man was worthy of commanding an entire Empire, as he surely bore a burden far greater than Raigu's own heart.  After the founding of the Gozoku, Doji Raigu rose to the challenge of "guarding" the Empire from the Hantei's whims, holding fast to his honor even while others abandoned their own.

A samurai does not compromise, or he loses his honor.  A champion does not compromise, or he loses the honor of all.

Doji Raigu is a tall samurai, but less slender than most Crane.  When dressed in his Emerald Armor he is a commanding figure, and many are awed by the man's fierce duelist eyes.  Unlike many Doji, Raigu is not passionate, nor does he possess a natural gift for conversation, and often speaks only to give his people commands.  In combat, the Emerald Champion has often reminded his enemies of his faith in the Empire: after all, it is everything the fight and die in the name of Rokugan, and in the hope of a truly worthy Hantei.
